One of the basic guards used in Brazilian Jiujitsu is the Butterfly Guard. Executing the pass is one thing but setting it up is another.

You cannot simply drag your opponent to your butterfly guard as with the position, a pass is always gonna be attempted.

The key is to get a good grip and to bait your opponent. Once there is tension then you can create the space you need to hook your legs properly. Once setup you may now try to do the different sweeps you can execute with the butterfly.
